Few things say summer quite like ice cream and swimming pools; fun in the sun has never been the same since the advent of water parks. The Garden Route has no shortage of these and promises hours of fun for locals and visitors alike.

Diaz Waterpark is situated at 1 Beach East Boulevard, Mossel Bay. This family owned business used to be situated in Hartenbos and features the ‘water worm’, one of the first supertubes built in South Africa. With the development of the Hartenbos Seefront, Diaz Waterpark relocated and became a welcome addition to Mossel Bay’s summer attractions.

The park offers picnic areas and limited braai facilities however no alcohol or glass is allowed. Takeaway meals, drinks and snacks are available from the Sausage Saloon. There are indoor and outdoor pools and water slides as well as ‘Pikkieland’, a safe environment for the little ones. While the park allows easy access to and from the beach it no longer offers adventure golf however, during the December holidays, jumping castles and other giant inflatables guarantee many hours of fun for anyone who grows tired of the water.

Although there are life guards and medical personnel on duty, all kids younger than 8 need to be accompanied by an adult. During the December holidays, the heated indoor swimming pool hosts nightly pool parties with laser lights and smoke machines. The entrance fee to the pool party also allows unlimited access to all the water slides in the park.

During the December holiday, the park is open from 09:00 to 22:00.

Pool parties are from 19:00 to 23:00.

Entry is free, with individual costs for slides and other facilities.

The Hartenbos Seefront is a sparkling new penny on the beachfront of the Garden Route. Officially opened on the 7th of December 2016, this development caused a public outcry with its steep parking tariffs. The Hartenbos Seefront is a one-stop destination that aims to offer something for every member of the family. With a selection of retail outlets and restaurants, this complex also included the Hartenbos Seefront Fun Park.

The fun park is the only ATKV resort with amenities available to the public and includes Water World, the Supercharged Play Area, Adventure Golf, a Splash Pad (opening in December 2017), Sizzling Sun Lounges and an Events Arena.

The smorgasbord of entertainment and activities at the Hartenbos Seefront also includes an ice skating rink (set to open this month), a gymnasium and a ‘Skoffelskuur’ however, those who want to make a day of it may just want to park elsewhere!

During the December holiday, the park is open from 08:30 to 23:00.

Entry fees range between R20 and R30, with individual costs for slides and other facilities.

Adventure Land is situated in Harkerville, midway between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. This park is arguably one of the most scenic in South Africa with its beautiful natural surrounding on a 24 ha estate. With a strong focus on being a water park, it offers a fantastic variety of water slides catering for the little ones to the most devoted adrenalin junky and they are all covered by the single entrance fee. Trampolines, swings and a jungle gym offer some variety.

During the high season there is a medical station and plenty of slide attendants. Visitors can purchase drinks, snacks and food from the kiosk or bring their own picnic (no alcohol or glass is allowed). Limited braai facilities are available yet need to be booked early. It is best to prepare for the outing as shady spots are limited and the park has a ‘no pass out’ policy.

During the December holiday, the park is open from 10:00 to 17:00.

Entry fees range from R130 to R140 per person.
